Theatre in a Bunker
A theatre friend of mine shared a video with me called “Ukrainian Theater Lives on in a Bunker”. Wow. Just wow. I have believed for so long that theatre can bring so much more than just entertainment, and here it was right in front of me. As a matter of fact, though there is nothing at all wrong with entertainment, if that’s the only reason to invest all the time, energy and emotion into what we do, honestly, I’m not so sure that I would do it. LOL In Ukraine, a country ravaged by war, a dedicated theatre company chose not to evacuate their city, but saw staying there as a way they could serve their people. They bring joy and laughter to a place of tears and sorrow. As one of their company stated, “Actors are doctors of the soul.”
We all want to be involved in something that is significant – something that goes beyond ourselves, right? There is so much focus on the ‘bad’ in our world right now – so much sadness and despair. To be able to bring encouragement and life and hope is HUGE! And, with all my heart, I believe theatre does that. It’s a beautiful tool that can lead us to understand others and ourselves, and can touch our hearts and inspire hope, as we are caught up in the ‘story’ of a well-written play.
After all, Jesus, the most amazing, loving Storyteller of all time, used the gift of story to bring truth and “heal our souls”. Why wouldn’t we do the same?
